Despite the past few years of turmoil, an unexpected silver lining of the pandemic for many was to seek better work/life balance. Finding ways to separate work and wellness at home requires some effort, but makes an enormous difference not only in one's own clarity and peace of mind, but can change the mood of your entire home. With some simple decluttering, light reorganization, and a splash of design using existing materials, you can create your own wellness room, or even a corner of a room, depending on the space you have available.

A wellness room provides a designated space to prioritize wellbeing, free of the distractions (and apps) that clutter our minds and steal our attention. Whether it be a place to sit and be quiet, decompress from the workday, or even a ten-minute time out in a space where no one needs anything, a technology-free, distraction-free space can work wonders, no matter the amount of time you have to spend there.

To create a space that works for you, choose a room or area of your home that could be repurposed for a focus on wellness. Clear the space of any clutter, remove anything that doesn't instill a sense of peace, and then decide what amenities will work best for you. Cool colors like blues, greens and purples instill a sense of calm. A simple rug and a few throw pillows provide comfort, or if you need more back support, pull in a favorite comfy chair. If scent is your thing, add an essential oil diffuser, burn some incense, or light a candle (but never leave it unattended!). For an added boost of oxygen, add a plant or two, preferably real and easy to care for. Take inspiration from favorite places you've visited on holiday that create a sense of peace, and make the area your own bespoke retreat.

In the midst of a tumultuous world, the gift of daily calm is immeasurable. As we face the unknown now more than ever, what we can do is prioritize our wellbeing, work with what we already have, and maintain our optimism as we continuously strive for what we want in life. While it may seem counterintuitive at first, taking the time and space to sit still and center oneself promotes calmer, clearer thinking, improves concentration and focus, and increases productivity. Until that perfect new home appears on the market, adding a wellness space can be the perfect way to bridge the gap.
