Playa del Rey, also known as the "Beach of the King" is a beachside neighborhood on the Westside of Los Angeles. Sandwiched between Marina del Rey to the north, and LAX to the south, Playa del Rey is considered one of the more quaint beachside communities in Los Angeles.

While there has been recent commercial, mixed-use, and single family residential developments in the area, Playa del Rey still preserves its charming neighborhood appeal. Adjacent to the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve, this community is home to many native birds and wildlife found nowhere else is Los Angeles. Playa del Rey is a hidden gem within the Los Angeles beach communities.

The Community

Playa del Rey has recently shifted to more of a tech-forward, millennial neighborhood thanks to larger tech companies that have recently moved into the area. This is a more constant theme of many of Los Angeles' beachside communities. That said, Playa del Rey is definitely more quaint than its neighbors Playa Vista, Venice, and Santa Monica. Younger professionals and families love this little beachside community. Not only are the home prices slightly more affordable, but much of the city has been preserved from new development. The Playa del Rey community takes great pride in their quaint neighborhood.

The Culture

If you want nothing more except the sounds of crashing waves lulling you into a midday nap, then Playa del Rey could be the neighborhood for you. Playa del Rey maintains that true, Southern California authentic beach lifestyle without the tourists, traffic, and ultra high-end developments. Take an afternoon stroll to Fisherman's Village. Take a boat out to sea and spend the day cruising around the Marina. Grab your bike and take ride down the 30-mile bicycle path.

Lifestyle

Much like many of the beachside communities in Los Angeles, Playa del Rey is very pedestrian and bike friendly. Park your car on Friday after work, and forget about it. Aside from the beach, Playa del Rey offers the beautiful Ballona Wetlands, which boast a wide variety of wildlife.

You can also walk down the beach towards the marina where many residents enjoy fun activities, such as paddle boarding and kayaking. Or, just take in the sunset on a lazy Sunday evening. You have one of LA's best beaches at your doorstep.

Real Estate Market

As alluded to above, Playa del Rey's real estate market is not dominated by high-end, new construction homes at absurd prices. Much of Playa's inventory is comprised of existing and quaint single family residences, as well as more modern condo complexes and townhomes. With a median home price of just under $1M, many first time buyers and

younger professionals find Playa del Rey very desirable due to its more "entry-level" prices to beachside living. With the surge of the tech influence at the adjacent Silicon Beach, Playa del Rey has become more expensive in recent years. Even so, relative to its more expensive neighbors (Playa Vista, Venice, Santa Monica, and Manhattan Beach), Playa del Rey is an excellent option for any budget.
