A massive boulder with an indentation shaped like a flying eagle gives this eclectic, family-friendly community its name. Since the early 20th century, artists, filmmakers, and counter-culture writers have gravitated to Eagle Rock for its artistic community, vintage shops, amazing eateries, and relaxed vibe.

You’ll find quiet neighborhoods just blocks away from Colorado and Eagle Rock Boulevard’s hip cafes, family-owned diners, and trendy restaurants. Occidental College is a central landmark in Eagle Rock, and the stretch of the Ventura Freeway that goes through town was even renamed the “President Barack H. Obama Highway” after the school’s most famous alum.

There are nine Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monuments in the area, including Eagle Rock City Hall, and residents enjoy congregating at local cafes, craft breweries, annual festivals, and community events.

The Community

From art galleries to parks and cafes, you’ll find people gathered to enjoy each other’s company in Eagle Rock. Clusters of shops and businesses on Colorado Boulevard make it possible to grab coffee, take a yoga class, and meet friends for breakfast at local favorite Four Café.

Art lovers will enjoy strolling the exhibits and grounds of Taj Art Gallery, hikers can climb the Eagle Rock Canyon Trail, and sports enthusiasts can hit the gym or join a softball league at the Eagle Rock Recreation Center.

Neighborhood schools are run by District 4 of the Los Angeles Unified School District and include Eagle Rock Elementary, Junior High, and High Schools, and Dahlia Heights and Annandale Elementary Schools. There is a Montessori Preschool for the little ones and of course Occidental College offers a wide array of degree programs (and you may recognize the campus as “California University” in Beverly Hills 90210, and from movies like Clueless and Jurassic Park III.)

Eagle Rock boasts great nightlife too, from All Star Lanes retro bowling alley to empanadas and wine at Malbec Market, and the annual Eagle Rock Music Festival draws music fans from across LA.

The Culture

Love of the arts, the outdoors, community, great food, and fitness are cornerstones of Eagle Rock culture. Cyclists gather at A bloc LA coffeehouse before and after morning rides.

Small galleries, indie clothing boutiques, and unique gift shops line the major thoroughfares, and people from all walks of life gather to do yoga at One Down Dog or join a class at Pilates Eagle Rock.

Four Café sources ingredients from local farmers markets for their seasonal California cuisine, and new Taiwanese restaurant Joy is hopping with patrons every day of the week.

Eagle Rock landmarks have been created through the entertainment industry too. Pat & Lorraine’s Coffee Shop was featured in Reservoir Dogs, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck wrote the Good Will Hunting script in their apartment here, and in a quiet side neighborhood, you can find the Pearson family home from This is Us.

Lifestyle

On weekday mornings, pick up a latte and a “droptop” (topped toast) at the Eagle Rock outpost of Hilltop Coffee & Kitchen, Issa Rae’s coffee shop chain, or an oat milk flat white at local favorite Found Coffee. Freelancers and students will love the quiet study/work vibe, Everything Avocado Bagels and Mayan Mochas at Swork, and on weekends head to Rockin’ Egg Café, the neighborhood gathering spot for breakfast.

Your furry friend will have a blast running around the Eagle Rock Dog Park or playing with other pooches in the mini park above the patio at Muddy Paw Coffee.

Just to the east art aficionados can peruse the exhibits at the Norton Simon Museum and kiddos can interact with the hands-on exhibits at Kidspace Children’s Museum.

A house-cured pastrami sandwich at The Oinkster and Turkish street food at Spitz are musts for lunch, which you can walk off on the Eagle Rock Park hiking trail.

Afternoon shoppers will love seeking hidden vintage treasures at Owl Talk or Foxhole, followed by Thai iced tea on the shaded patio at Thai Eagle Rox.

In the evening, go bowling at All Star Lanes or meet friends at Relentless Brewing & Spirits where you can enjoy craft brews and watch the game.

The whole family will love take-out pizza from Casa Bianca, and for a special night out, indulge in steak au poivre and French wine at Cafe Beaujolais or succulent kebabs and complimentary baklava at Aslan Mediterranean Cuisine. There is something for everyone’s taste in Eagle Rock!
