Revitalized downtown Los Angeles is now a hub of fantastic restaurants and cafes, stunning rooftop lounges, incredible arts and culture, and exciting nightlife.

The second most diverse area in LA, downtown has the vibrant neighborhoods of Little Tokyo, Chinatown, and Olvera Street, and its thriving government centers and commerce are reflected in the Civic Center, Financial, and Jewelry Districts. In fact, the famous Harry Winston Jewelers got its start in a downtown hotel.

Being Los Angeles, the arts are huge here too. You’ll find hip galleries in the Arts District, contemporary art at The Broad museum, and performing arts at Walt Disney Concert Hall, designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry. Great shops can be found at Grand Central Market, The Bloc shopping complex, and Fig at 7th Shopping Mall, as well as the area’s small ethnic markets and clothing boutiques.

Big hotels and bank buildings dominate the skyline, the most iconic being the cylindrical US Bank tower and Wilshire Grand Center, the tallest building west of Chicago. The LA Live Complex provides non-stop entertainment with its theaters, upscale shops, and trendy restaurants. You will never be bored living in DTLA!

The Community

There are 60,000 residents and over 500,000 jobs in downtown Los Angeles, meaning people come from all over the region for work, including employees of over 80 tech firms located here. Union Station’s Metrolink, Amtrak, and LAX FlyAway shuttle will get you to your destination without having to worry about traffic, and there are 5 metro stations downtown within walking distance of many residences.

Folks can grocery shop anywhere from small neighborhood grocers to Ralphs and Whole Foods, and if you love flowers, you will delight in the gigantic, wholesale Original Flower Market. Fantastic healthcare is available at Dignity Health-California Hospital Medical Center, and daily fitness is right at hand at a plethora of gyms, yoga and Pilates studios, and outdoor basketball courts for pick-up games.

Schools here are under the LAUSD, including some of the district’s great charter and alternative schools, including San Pedro Street Elementary, Ramon C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts, and California Academy for Liberal Studies Early College High School.

The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising and the Colburn School for music and the performing arts are downtown too. Work, education, health, beauty, and the arts are important pillars of the downtown community.

The Culture

Its diverse neighborhoods, eclectic eateries, arts, and architecture give DTLA a vibrant culture where there is always something to explore. One of its major hubs is the LA Live complex, which is comprised of trendy shops and restaurants, upscale hotels, a Regal Cinema with a massive 800-seat theater for movie premieres, the Grammy Museum where you can pay homage to music greats, and the Microsoft Theater which hosts the Emmy, ESPY, and American Music Awards.

Along with the connected LA Convention Center and Crypto.com Arena, LA Live will serve as a host for the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics. Of course, you can see sports and live music year-round at Crypto.com Arena, “The House that Kobe Built”, where the Lakers, Kings, Clippers, and Sparks play home games, and which hosts over 250 events and four million guests each year.

Book enthusiasts come downtown to peruse the stacks and marvel at the gorgeous interior of the Central Library and to buy books and records at the iconic Last Bookstore. No matter your interests, every day is an adventure in the downtown area.

Lifestyle

Start your morning with an oat latte and a roasted heirloom tomato scramble at bright and airy Verve Coffee Roasters or grab a cappuccino and fresh bagels to go at The Bread Lounge, right across the street from Warner Music’s Corporate HQ.

For brunch, head to Poppy + Rose for chicken & waffles and rose mojitos or Bottega Louie for smoked salmon benedicts, portobello fries, and outstanding bloody marys.

Take your pooch for a walk around the beautiful, 32-acre Los Angeles State Historic Park, where you can also have a picnic, fly a kite, or catch an outdoor craft festival on the weekends. On Sundays, try some new treats at Smorgasburg, downtown’s weekly outdoor street fair, then spend a chill afternoon relaxing at Grand Park.

The whole family will enjoy bowling and playing arcade games at XLanes and have a blast with the VR games, escape rooms, and robot bartender at Two Bit Circus.

For an adventure higher up, head to the US Bank Tower and take the elevator to its OUE Skyspace, where you can look down over the city while you go down the glass slide.

Dinner can be as simple as street tacos from Sonoratown, as hip as glazed pork shanks and mango margaritas at The Girl and the Goat, or as fancy as steak frites and Bordeaux on the patio at Perch, where you can have a cocktail on the rooftop bar and watch the sun set over the skyline.

There is no shortage of delights to be had in DTLA.
