Who needs the Napa Valley when you have over 40 wineries in your backyard? The city of Livermore, on the eastern edge of the Bay Area, boasts a Mediterranean climate, beautiful scenery, and is one of California’s premier wine-growing regions. On top of that, it constantly receives “A” grades for its schools and ethnic diversity.

With a population of 90,000, the largest in the Tri-Valley Area, Livermore was the only city in California awarded as an “All-American City” at the annual National Civic League ceremony in 2021. Formerly called Nottingham, Livermore was renamed for Robert Livermore, a rancher who settled in the area and planted the first wine grapes here. Today, it is home to the federally funded Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, “a premier research and development institution for science and technology applied to national security,” which is also the city’s largest employer. The “Lawrence” in the lab’s name comes from Ernest Lawrence, recipient of the 1939 Nobel Prize in physics for inventing the particle accelerator called a cyclotron.

Many of your neighbors may be scientists and tech professionals, but the blend of agriculture and city life, along with an affordable cost of housing, draws people of all backgrounds to call Livermore a warm, inviting place to call home.

The Community

Livermore is the third wealthiest midsize (65,000 and 249,999 people) city in the nation, following only Newport Beach in Orange County and neighboring Pleasanton. It is also a relatively young city, with a median age of just 38. The city is diverse, and in addition to churches, you will find the Islamic Center of Livermore (ICL) and the Shiva-Vishnu Hindu Temple here in town.

Livermore’s largest employers are the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and Unified Valley School District, which runs 11 excellent elementary (K-5 and K-8) schools, three middle schools (grades 6-8), two comprehensive high schools, and three alternative high schools. Livermore also has a number of highly-rated charter and private schools.

You’ll find young families, tech commuters, and a rapidly growing blue-collar workforce here as the city is expanding. There is a BART station nearby in Dublin/Pleasanton, a fantastic area bus system, and business jets can fly in and out of Livermore Municipal Airport.

The Culture

Livermore’s downtown First Street district is home to fantastic shops, cafes, restaurants, gastropubs, and even a rooftop bar and kitchen. The beautiful architecture and fountain plaza draw residents to relax and just enjoy themselves in a lovely setting. Shopping options here range from big malls to antique stores to the San Francisco Premium Outlets, and restaurants from Latin American to Indian and Middle Eastern.

There are many lovely parks in town, and just ten minutes south is Del Valle Regional Park, with a huge lake for sailing, fishing, and swimming, as well as thousands of acres of oak-covered hills for hiking, horseback riding, and relaxing in nature. For serious hikers, the park is also the trailhead for the Ohlone Wilderness Trail, a 28-mile scenic hiking trail. You can play a round of golf at Las Positas, an oasis on the west side of town, or at the stunning Wente Vineyards course surrounded by rolling hills and grapevines.

Livermore hosts annual wine festivals, a Children’s Fair, and is even home to the Intermediate Little League World Series!
